The transfer from Klagenfurt airport is a little longer - about 3 hours 45 minutes by train.  However, you can get some very cheap flights from the UK to Klagenfurt and the train journey is very picturesque:

The transfer from Munich airport is about 2 hours 15 minutes by car, or 4 hours 15 minutes by train.

 

 
Travelling from Salzburg Airport to Zell am See and Kaprun 

Travelling from Salzburg Airport to Zell am See and Kaprun by Bus:

 

The 260 bus leaves Salzburg Airport several times a day, taking you directly to Zell am See.  It takes about 1 hour 45 minutes, quicker than the train, and is very inexpensive.  If the times fit in with your flights, the 260 bus is the cheapest and quickest option.  The Salzburger VerkehrsVerbund web site has an on-line bus route planner, gives ticket prices, and also allows you to download bus timetables.

 

Another option to get from Salzburg Airport to Zell am See and Kaprun is the Vorderegger bus.  The Vorderegger travels directly to Zell am See, but is more expensive than the 260 bus at about €50 return for an adult and €25 for a child.

 

When looking at bus timetables, it is worth making a note of earlier bus times, just in case your flight is early.  The time it takes to collect your luggage at Salzburg Airport can also be relatively quick compared to UK airports.

 

Travelling from Salzburg Airport to Zell am See and Kaprun By Train:

 

The train is another very cheap way to get from Salzburg Airport to Zell am See.  The journey costs, for a single ticket, about €15 for adults and €6 for children.  Before you can get the train, you need to get the bus from the airport to the main Salzburg train station (Salzburg Hauptbahnhof).  You can then get a train from Salzburg directly to Zell am See, although a change may be required depending on the timing.

 

It can get very busy when taking the train back to Salzburg Airport from Zell am See or Kaprun, so during the peak winter season it might be advisable to book your return journey in advance so that you can reserve seats.

Travelling from Salzburg Airport to Zell am See and Kaprun By Hire Car:

 

Hiring a car from Salzburg Airport can be relatively cheap if you book in advance. A small car costs from about €30 per day. However, you won’t really need a car in Zell am See as there are excellent public transport links.  You can also hire a car for the day in Zell am See from around €50 a day.

 

Travelling from Salzburg Airport to Zell am See and Kaprun By Taxi:

 

A pre-booked taxi from Salzburg Airport to Zell am See or Kaprun costs around €120.  However, the taxis can often take 7 or 8 people so it can be cost effective if you have the right number in your party.

 

 

Driving to Zell am See From The UK
The route from the UK to Zell am See or Kaprun is quite straightforward, but it is a long drive, taking around 12 hours.
 
To avoid toll roads, leave France as early as possible in your journey and go via Belgium, Netherlands and Germany. On this route you should enter Austria on the A8 so you will not need to pay the vignette duty, which is only required for motorway driving.
